Choosing insulated glass: Low-E, double and triple glazing

Most of a window’s insulation comes from the glass. The differences between double, triple, Low-E and solar-control glass.

Glass makes up most of a window’s surface, so it largely determines insulation performance.

Double and triple glazing

Double units with air or argon between the panes are the standard. In cold climates and on north facades, triple glazing significantly reduces heat loss.

Low-E coating

An invisible metal-oxide coating keeps heat from escaping the room and lowers heating costs in winter.

Solar-control glass

Reduces overheating in summer on south and west facades and on large glass areas.

Safety glass

Tempered or laminated glass should be used in doors, balustrades and glass near floor level.
