Curtain wall types: capped, structural silicone and semi-capped

The three most common curtain wall systems on commercial buildings and which projects suit each.

Curtain wall systems fall into three main groups depending on how the glass is fixed to the frame.

Capped system

Glass is held from outside by aluminium caps; mullion and transom lines are clearly visible. Easy to install and economical.

Structural silicone system

Glass is bonded to the frame with structural silicone, so only glass is visible from outside. Chosen for prestigious, uninterrupted glass facades.

Semi-capped system

Only horizontal or vertical caps are used, giving the facade a horizontal or vertical banded look.

The right system depends on building height, wind load, architectural intent and budget.
